Arcades 騎樓 are a type of architectural design with external corridors. The ground floor of the building faces the street. It is built as a pedestrian walkway. The second floor is above the walkway, as if it is “riding” on the ground floor. Hence the name “arcade”.
The arcade design provides pedestrians with shelter from wind and rain. It is a type of exterior corridor architectural design.
將建築物一樓臨近街道部分建成走廊，走廊上方為二樓樓層，宛如二樓「騎」在一樓上，故稱為「騎樓」。 騎樓的設計為行人提供了遮風避雨的功能。 一種外廊式建築設計。
Arcades are common in the area that rains often, for example southern China. There are no more new arcades, those remained are more than a century, as far as I know.
